The collective wedding at the Taopu Fire Station

Eight members of the Putuo District fire brigade took part in a collective wedding ceremony with their chosen ones on Monday afternoon.

The unusual ceremony was held at the Taopu Fire Station on Gulang Road.

May 20 is meaningful because in Chinese the date sounds like "I love you."

Among the eight fire brigade members, seven are male and one is female. They work as firefighters, technicians and officials.

Wang Huan, an official with the Zhenru fire squad, said he first got to know his wife, Zhu Yingmo, at high school.

Later, Zhu's university had a blaze and her post about it on social networks was picked up by Wang.

"She asked me to recommend a potential boyfriend among my colleagues, and I recommended myself," he said. "It was a beautiful chance that we're now together."

Lin Jing, an assistant engineer with the fire-prevention unit of the brigade, said she made friends with her husband, Li Wenshuo, at university when they served as volunteers.

Lin said Li, who works in the safety industry, understands that she often has to work overtime during holidays.

"I can take care of home when she's at work," Li said.
