A restored Chinese chariot of the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) is on display.

An exhibition of transport from ancient times to the present has raised its curtain at the Shanghai Auto Museum in Anting Town in Jiading District.

Two highlight exhibits of the display are a restored Chinese chariot of the Warring States Period (475-221 BC) and an antique car manufactured in 1902.

The chariot unearthed at the Majiayuan Cemetery in Zhangjiachuan County, Gansu Province, is known as the most luxurious transport in ancient times.

The Gansu Province Research Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology spent more than 2 million yuan (US$290,000) restoring it, based on its original materials and techniques.

The chariot ornaments and belt plaques feature the elements absorbed from the bronze-age cultures in the Eurasian steppe region. Leather cushions and exquisite metal sculptures are found inside the chariot, which was rarely seen in ancient times.

A Panhard & Levassor automobile

Another treasure of the exhibition, a Panhard & Levassor automobile, was selected from the collection of the museum. The antique car produced in 1902 was among the first cars with a steering wheel. It has participated in several antique car rallies.

The two exhibits were the most distinctive transportation vehicles of their times, said the museum curator.

A rich diversity of supporting exhibits such as ancient harnesses, equestrian relics, items related with equestrian sports, antique car logos, new-energy vehicles and contemporary art vehicles are also on display.

Among them, a carved brick of the Song Dynasty (960-1279), which shows a woman playing polo, and a mural brick painting, showing a warrior on a galloping horse holding a bow and arrow, are the most precious.

Seminars, cultural lectures, performances and themed tours will be organized during the time of exhibition.

Vintage car parades will be held at the Shanghai Auto Expo Park in Jiading as part of the event, plus trial runs of new energy vehicles and chances to a driverless shuttle ride at E-zone inside the Anting Shanghai International Automobile City.

The Shanghai Auto Museum opened to the public in 2017. It boasts a collection of more than 100 cars, representing over 20 brands from China and abroad spanning 100 years of the automobile history.
