A mother's sacrifice in the Gobi
A Yuju Opera performance on the theme of motherly love will be staged at Shanghai Daning Theater on Saturday and Sunday.
Yuju Opera originated in central China's Henan Province.
"A Mother in the Gobi" is set in the 1950s and tells the story of a woman named Liu Yueji who takes her son and her adopted daughter to look for their father in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. She is abandoned by her husband who in fact suffers from a serious illness and doesn’t want to be a burden to his wife so he just breaks up with her.
The strong woman decides to stay in Xinjiang and join the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps with her children.
Liu is similar to numerous members of the corps. The opera speaks of their devotion to the development of Xinjiang.
The work is in the running for the Wenhua Award at the 12th China Art Festival.
