While rowers were competing on Suzhou Creek in Putuo District for the annual dragon boat race, visitors to Mengqing Park alongside were attracted to the beautiful voice of local tenor Wei Song, who started to perform "My Country and I," a song made popular by Li Guyi in 1985, and was soon joined by other singers and musicians.

Performers included erhu (Chinese fiddle) virtuoso Ma Xiaohui, Jin Jing, the famous 2008 Olympics torchbearer who, during the Paris relay, fended off protesters from her wheelchair, Ding Zuohong, a representative of local private entrepreneurs, and young singers such as Luo Yu and Wu Ruirui.

A student art troupe from East China Normal University, a string orchestra from Shanghai Normal University Music College, athletes who just finished a race and large crowds on the riverbanks also joined in the show to sing along.
