Angry passenger gets 3.5 years to cool off
A passenger who grabbed a bus steering wheel, causing the bus to crash into a repair truck, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison by the Pudong New Area People's Court on Wednesday.
There were 12 people on board at the time of the incident, but no one was hurt.
The woman, Liang, caught a No.783 bus on December 4 and missed her stop. As the bus pulled away, she shouted angrily at the driver, telling him to stop and open the door for her, which he initially refused to do. When he did stop and opened the door twice, she refused to get off.
After the driver closed the door and started the engine, Liang grabbed the wheel of the bus which then crashed into a repair truck that had stopped at a red light. Both vehicles were damaged to the tune of nearly 4,000 yuan (US$580).
Liang's family paid for the damage, which brought her a more lenient penalty.
Before the incident, Liang, a migrant from Sichuan Province who has been working in the city for years, had expected to soon qualify for residency in Shanghai, but this possibility no longer exists.
