Driver detained for 'dangerous driving'
Passengers inside the vehicle could be seen pressed against the windows like canned sardines.
A driver has been detained for taking 33 people in a vehicle designed to carry only five, police said on Thursday.
The vehicle was stopped by police in Songjiang District at the intersection of Songhui Road W. and Chenta Road on the morning of June 10.
Police said the vehicle was moving unusually slowly and its suspension appeared to be under a heavy weight.
Passengers inside the vehicle could be seen pressed against the windows like canned sardines.
The driver, a man surnamed Zhu, said he was taking a group of workers from Chedun Town to a factory on Songzhen Highway.
Zhu said he was aware that he was taking an excessive amount of people but said he did it “for convenience”, according to the police.
Zhu could face a charge of dangerous driving. If convicted, he could serve up to six months in jail.
A remarkable number of people were glad to get out.
