Authorities up the trash talking
Companies and individuals who refuse to sort garbage will be listed in the city's public credibility platform from July 1 when domestic garbage regulations become effective.
Garbage collection, transportation and treatment companies with serious irregularities will have their licenses revoked, according to the Shanghai's Urban Management and Law Enforcement Bureau.
Property management companies with irregularities will be listed in the city’s property management service company credibility management system.
Authorities have given out about 1,000 rectification notices regarding garbage sorting this year. More than 12,000 inspections have been made.
Among them, 77 percent were related to failure to set up containers for different types of trash.
Enterprises can be fined up to 500 yuan (US$72) for failure to have correct containers, and up to 1,000 yuan for failure to sort waste.
From July 1, the fines will be raised to 5,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan, respectively.
Individuals can be fined up to 200 yuan for failure to sort garbage.
