Passengers on social media complained that it took them an hour to pass just 5 stops on Metro Line 7 Monday morning.

Shanghai Metro said on its Weibo account at 8:27 am that the emergency brake of one of the trains was somehow activated, causing all trains from Middle Longhua Road station to Zhenping Road station to operate at a limited speed. All trains in the section were delayed for at least 10 minutes.

At 8:48 am, the Metro operator said on Weibo the delay was estimated to be longer than 15 minutes. The Metro said all problems were resolved and the operation was back to normal at 9:56 am.

But passengers said otherwise. Many complained they were still stuck in the train after 10 am.

Passengers delayed can get a refund after they get off, but some said they were late and had lost their full-attendance bonus.

Some passengers said on Weibo that an old lady's handbag was jammed in the screen door at Changshou Road. Despite the station attendant promising to get the bag for her later, she insisted on opening up the door.

Shanghai Metro didn’t confirm this, but said in a statement the brake simply malfunctioned.
