A hospital employee scans his face to pay the canteen bill at the southern branch of Renji Hospital.

A Shanghai hospital is building its staff canteen into an intelligent facility, where employees can use facial recognition to pay their bills immediately while each dish comes with information showing the name, price and calories, a move that promotes a healthy diet.

In addition, canteen users can receive a healthy diet report through their WeChat account, which includes intake of energy, fat, protein and carbohydrate in their diet and changes and tendencies of personal diet data, officials from the southern branch of Renji Hospital said.

The system will also offer individualized analysis on nutrition and suggestions on what sports to play to help improve staff's health and perfect their personal health management.

“Information system is always used to make medical services convenient. But it can also be used to improve the work and life of our staff,” said Dr Li Jin, vice president of the hospital.

The facial recognition and instant payment system and the healthy diet function will be extended to canteens serving patients and their families if the current experiment runs smoothly, officials said.
