In Daning Road Subdistrict, it’s everyone’s business to help the poor and needy. Over the years, several charity campaigns there have helped thousands of people out of difficulties, but it’s far from enough.

On Tuesday, a foundation was set up to support local good acts, the next step toward becoming a warm neighborhood.

The Ning Foundation, established by the subdistrict, has raised 2 million yuan (US$290,000) in donations by local residents, companies, social groups and charity stores.

The money will be used in six projects in the latter half of this year, according to Si Jing, director of the subdistrict office.

At Chinese festivals, such as Mid-autumn and Spring festivals, officials ensure that everyone in the subdistrict has appropriate festival food. Craftsmen will be invited to teach their skills to needy families.

The elderly will be helped to prepare their will as to protect their rights, and children will be given classes in first aid and fire escape.

“The foundation will bring together local resources and inspire residents to take care of each other and show care in our community,” Si said. “It will be a positive influence on our children, and help to build a better world.”

People can not only donate money, they can also “donate” their skills and their resources.

Si said officials will learn what local people really need, and publish full details of where the funds are used.

“We will use the money where our people want it most, to raise their satisfaction and sense of belonging to our community,” she added.
