Scientists choose honesty over fame
What’s necessary for scientific researchers? Good moral character is above all, the city’s scientists said in a meeting held at Shanghai Science Hall on Thursday.
“Whatever you do, there are some common principles to follow. We have to be honest and just, which are very basic. Then, it comes to your skepticism, sense of cooperation and open mind,” said Liu Xila, professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
He said Chinese scientists sometimes blur plagiarism and quotes. “Some of them initially mark the quotes in their papers, but later they just regard the content as original,” he said.
Zhang Xu, academician from Chinese Academy of Sciences, said creativity comes from scientific spirit which at its core is honesty.
“Young scientists should not be anxious to achieve quick success, and they can’t employ trickery to gain fame,” he said.
