A global competition to design nine villages in Shanghai was launched on Thursday by Shanghai Youth League.

The nine villages are located in Baoshan, Minhang, Jiading, Fengxian, Chongming, Jinshan, Songjiang and Qingpu districts and the Pudong New Area.

The villages have different needs.

The Tongxin village in Maqiao Town, Minhang District, needs an entire facelift. Villagers draw private electric wires to their homes and occupy public space to create their own vegetable gardens.

Wu Shunan, a village official, said she hopes a redesign of the village can improve the living environment for all and reduce disputes among the residents.

While in Xuyao village in Chonggu Town, Qingpu District, people live in beautiful nature. Wang Yu, a village official, said they’re looking for a design to bring out the cultural characteristics of the village so as to attract young professionals to return and settle.

All interested teams can check out the webpage for the competition https://mlxc.yunban.cn for more information. A participation application has to be submitted by July 4.

Shanghai Youth League said an English version of the webpage is under construction and will be introduced soon.

The winners will be announced at the end of October, and the first prize will be 20,000 yuan (US$2,900).
