A total of 154 people had their hair cut to help children with leukemia at Shanghai Children’s Hospital on Wednesday.

The hair will be made into wigs for the children.

It is the fourth haircut event organized by the hospital, which said psychological wellbeing is also important for recovery.

The Shanghai Hair and Beauty Trade Association recruited 33 barbers to provide the  haircuts for free.

Sun Zongyu, a 12-year-old girl, not only donated her hair but money for it to be made into a wig.

Her parents said Sun’s grandfather had a blood disease, so she had a strong motivation to help children with blood diseases.

A 15-year-old girl, who is a former leukemia patient, also donated her hair.

“I felt so depressed and lost self-esteem after losing my hair during treatment," she said. "I refused all social communication.

"I came here today to donate my hair and also use my own story to encourage other children with leukemia who are still fighting the disease.”

The Shanghai Hair and Beauty Trade Association has organized 28 hair salons in 10 districts to accept donations.

A map with participating salons was released at the event.
