The city’s first local medical network opened in Huangpu District on Sunday. Residents can receive high-quality and classified medical service near their home instead of going all the way to the crowded major public hospitals.

The network is led by Shanghai No. 9 People’s Hospital, the newly established Huangpu branch of Shanghai No. 9, and five neighborhood health centers.

Shanghai No. 9 serves 4.4 million outpatients a year, ranking No. 1 in the city. But the huge number of patients causes long waiting times and crowded traffic in the neighborhood.

To give residents more convenient health service, the district government and the hospital pushed the construction of a local medical network.

The Huangpu branch of Shanghai No. 9 consists of four hospitals in the district. The new branch with 600 beds started to operate last year with 4,000 to 4,500 outpatients every day.

Top medical specialists from Shanghai No. 9 serve in the branch to allow patients to receive treatment near their home.

Dr Wu Hao, president of Shanghai No. 9, said the hospital will further push a standardized clinical practice for key diseases in the district to prevent residents going all the way to a big hospital for treatment.
