Shopping mall joins list of businesses failing to sort trash properly
Crystal Galleria, a shopping mall in Jing’an District, received a rectification notice after Shanghai’s new trash sorting laws took effect on Monday morning.
The garbage bins in the shopping mall did not have the required signs and the mall was also found to have mixed trash when dumping.
Plastic water bottles, which should be placed in recyclable bins, and fruit, which is wet garbage, were found in bins for dry garbage.
Three tree branches, which should be wet trash, were mixed with dry garbage, together with construction waste, which does not fall into any domestic garbage category.
"The inspections target whether enterprises set up four types of garbage bins based on requirements and sort trash correctly," said He Yujun, an urban management team member.
"We will also conduct inspections on collection and transportation companies," he said.
"Law enforcement is not the purpose, rather to educate and guide enterprises to rectify," he added.
