Man, woman accused of child molesting

A man and a woman have been detained for alleged child molestation, Shanghai police said on Wednesday.

Police in Putuo District said they received a report from a girl’s mother at 10pm on June 30. She said her daughter was taken by her friend, a 49-year-old woman surnamed Zhou, from their hometown in neighboring Jiangsu Province to a hotel in Shanghai, where the girl was then molested by a man in a room.

Police started their investigation immediately, and the suspect, a 57-year-old man surnamed Wang, also from Jiangsu, came to the police for investigation on the afternoon of Monday after police “worked on it.”

Zhou, who took the girl to Shanghai, turned herself in to the police on the evening of Tuesday, according to police.

Both Wang and Zhou are now under criminal detention for the suspicion of child molestation, and the investigation is still underway, police said.
