A center for women in yuezi (the month after giving birth) in the Pudong New Area has closed suddenly, leaving about 40 families in the lurch.

The Qinziyue International Mother-Child Center in Jin Mao Tower opened in January, and the 40 who paid between 50,000 yuan (US$7,300) and 100,000 yuan to the center are demanding a refund and have complained to the city's 12345 hotline.

The city market authorities have listed the company in the abnormal operation list as staff could not been contacted since June 4, when operations ceased.

Only one call was answered and the person said they were raising money to refund customers. Investigation is underway and if fraud was involved, the case will be transferred to relevant authorities, according to the Pudong New Area Administration for Market Regulation.

A victim named Li said he was told by the center that it had been open for more than a year and had booming business with rooms fully reserved.

The center asked Li to pay 100,000 yuan in advance and he paid 69,800 yuan in March, after negotiation. He learned that the center was closed in early June. Unable to contact them by phone, he went to the center and found it was empty.

Li and other families have alerted police.
