Businesses fined for food violations

Watsons, Decathlon, Kedi, and Papa John's have been punished or warned for food-related violations, the Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation revealed on its website.

The Hutai Road outlet of Watsons in Jing'an District has been fined 50,000 yuan (US$7,270) for selling expired food, according to the Jing'an District Administration for Market Regulation.

Officials made an inspection at the store on March 6 based on tip-off, and found a pack of Kracie candies produced in mid-December 2017, with an expiry period of 12 months.

Another pack of the same brand candies was sold on March 4, but its expiry date was January 15, officials revealed.

The expired candies were destroyed at the scene, according to the administration.

Decathlon Shanghai was fined 231,094 yuan and had illegal profit totaling 38,695 yuan confiscated by the market watchdog in the Pudong New Area.

The whey protein solid beverage sold by the company contained HMB Calcium, without appropriate information on the label, according to the Pudong New Area Administration for Market Regulation.

A notice by the National Health Commission rules that HMB Calcium should be marked on the label with reminders that infants, children and pregnant women are not to take it, together with the intake limit.

Decathlon had sold 1,059 cans of the drinks, making a profit of 38,695 yuan.

The Pudong Avenue store of Kedi has been fined 10,000 yuan by the Pudong New Area Administration for Market Regulation for selling expired biscuits.

The expired biscuits had been destroyed by the store operator.

The Xinsongjiang Road outlet of Papa John's was given a warning for improper storage of food by the Songjiang District Administration for Market Regulation.

An NGS supermarket in Baoshan District was fined 100,000 yuan after tests found excessive florfenicol in eggs. RT-MART supermarket was fined 60,000 yuan for selling seasoning with excessive bacteria. 

The operator of Xincheng Kindergarten in Jiading District was given a warning by the Jiading District Administration for Market Regulation after dishware was found with coliform bacteria.
