Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong met Christophe Weber, president and CEO of Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, in Shanghai yesterday.

The bio-pharmaceutical sector is a strategic emerging industry of Shanghai, Ying told the guest. International pharmaceutical companies have set up regional headquarters and R&D centers in Shanghai. The innovation chain and industrial chain of biomedicine in Shanghai are constantly improving. The comprehensive advantages of a super-large city like Shanghai, as well as the opportunity to build science and technology centers and Asian medical centers, also provide a huge market and major opportunities for industrial development, he added.

Multinational companies, including Takeda Pharmaceutical, are welcome to further expand investment in Shanghai, continuously meet market demand and share development opportunities, Ying said.

Takeda Pharmaceutical has been developing in China for 25 years, and the development of Shanghai in recent years has been impressive, Weber said, adding that the company plans to further expand investment in the city, providing more innovative products to better meet market demand.

Takeda Pharmaceutical was set up in Japan in 1781. It’s the 8th largest pharmaceutical company in the world and the largest in Asia. In 2012 Takeda Pharmaceutical set up a research and development center for the Asia Pacific region in Shanghai.
