Shanghai Metro has finished upgrading around 1,500 ticket vending machines at 143 stations to allow people to pay with their smartphones.

The stations include most major transfer stations downtown such as People’s Square and Shanghai Railway Station, and all the stations of Line 16.

Passengers can choose to pay cash or scan a QR code. The machines support Alipay, UnionPay, WeChat Pay and other bank apps.

Previously, passengers including tourists who didn't have cash were unable to use the machines.

The Metro operator expects that by the end of this year all ticket vending machines will allow passengers to use mobile payment.
