A gang of fraudsters has been caught after one of them added a police officer in Shanghai on WeChat, police said on Tuesday.

He Qijun, a police officer from the Pudong New Area who is working at the police command center in Sanlin area, received a friend request on WeChat on July 3 from an unknown person.

The young woman introduced herself as a wine saleswoman.

Smelling a fraud, as “women” selling tea used to be a popular Internet fraud trick, He accepted. The fraud became more evident as he chatted with her.

He’s colleagues started to investigate the gang behind the scam and located the suspects in Hunan Province.

Ten people were caught later that month and taken to Shanghai. An investigation is underway. 

Pudong police said the gang had made more than 700,000 yuan (US$99,000) in one month.
