A man who broke into his ex-girlfriend's home and attacked her grandmother with laughing gas has been arrested, prosecutors in Putuo District said.

The man, who pretended to be a deliveryman, beat up the 77-year-old woman, forced her to inhale laughing gas and covered her mouth and nose with a pillow, which caused her to lose consciousness.

Laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, can slow down the metabolism and produce a calm, euphoric feeling. It is used for medical purposes such as treating pain. However, it has some associated risks.

According to Putuo District People's Procuratorate, Lu, the victim, was having dinner alone at home when she heard someone outside saying there was a parcel for her on April 3 this year.

When she opened the door, she found the "deliveryman" was Shen, her granddaughter's ex-boyfriend. As she tried to close the door, Shen broke into the house and said he want to talk with Lu.

Shen and Lu’s granddaughter Xu started a relationship in May last year, but soon broke up. Shen then attempted suicide by cutting his wrist in front of the building where Xu lived.

He hoped that Lu would persuade Xu to get together with him again. When Lu refused to help, he pushed her to the ground and beat her. He used tape and rope to bind Lu's hands and feet and forced her to inhale the laughing gas before covering her face with a pillow.

When Xu and her mother came home, Shen also attacked them.

After being arrested, Shen said he wanted to take revenge on Xu by hurting her family.
