The Pudong New Area is the most active district in Shanghai at night, statistics from China Unicom and UnionPay suggest.

“The night economy has become an important part of Pudong,” said Hu Kanghua from the Pudong Commission of Commerce. “Tourists from abroad and home, businessmen, local residents and people working here, they all have different demands.”

Pudong is structuring its night economy with rich resources alongside the Huangpu River and the central business districts such as Lujiazui.

Alongside the 22-kilometer waterfront of the Huangpu River, people can enjoy traditional tourism offerings, such as sightseeing cruises and the bird’s eye view of the city from The Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower. Meanwhile, they can also join a night reading event at one of the posthouses on the riverbank or watch an opera at the Shanghai Poly Grand Theater.

Hu said Pudong is trying to make its nightlife more colorful than simply offering food and entertainment.

The Shanghai Wild Animal Park opened up a night tour on August 8, making it the first zoo in China to open at night.

And the newly opened Fu Lei Library worked with Dayin Bookmall to open a 24-hour reading room, making it the first library to open 24/7 in Shanghai.
