West Bund shows latest AI technology
Three free exhibitions featuring the latest artificial intelligence technology have opened on the West Bund waterfront in Xuhui as part of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference.
Huawei, Tencent and Alibaba have displays at the West Bund Art Center and Tank Shanghai, both renovated from industrial buildings along Huangpu River.
Tencent’s T-Day exhibition features time travel and space rotation using AI technology. The history of the city’s Yuyuan Garden and shikumen, or stone-gate buildings, are shown through AI.
Visitors can watch classic movies in the Grand Theater and fireworks over the Lujiazui financial hub as well as experience AI medical checks, robot combat and unmanned vehicles at the art center through September 5.
In cooperation with the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, visitors can check the precise weather conditions on their birthday.
Alibaba’s exhibition at the No. 2 tank of the former aviation fuel tank complex features a mirror that can detect the mood of customers through expression-capture technology.
Huawei is showcasing remote medical procedures, robotic surgery and communication technology based on 5G at the No. 1 tank.
The latest homegrown computer chips are displayed at the exhibition. The chips are said to be able to compete with leading counterparts to help reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
Based on the 5G network, Huawei presents a future remote teaching framework where teachers in leading elementary and middle schools in cities can give lessons to students in remote regions through real-time 8K high-definition video. AI can capture the behavior of each student to help improve teaching.
The Xuhui session on the Huangpu River waterfront, where the first conference was held last year, runs from August 29 to 31 at the art center and Tank Shanghai.
Three forums and four other events will be held during the conference's Puxi session. The main site for the event will be the Expo Center in the Pudong New Area.
The Global AI in Healthcare Summit will be held on August 30 with over 100 scientists and industry leaders attending. Speakers will include members of the research team of Nobel laureate Tu Youyou.
Alongside the conference, there will be an eSports contest, and various tech-related art exhibitions in nearby art galleries and museums.
Tank Shanghai, housed in five thick steel aviation fuel tanks, is presenting an exhibition titled “Universe of Water Particles in the Tank.”
The site was built in 1917 to supply fuel to nearby Longhua Airport. Five oil tanks, a fire pool and docks have been preserved as reminders of times past. The site covers 60,000 square meters, a sixth of which are indoors.
Xuhui houses a third of the city’s key AI companies, including Tencent, Netease, Xiaomi, Microsoft and Amazon. The AI industry's value has reached 15.8 billion yuan (US$2.24 billion) in Xuhui, a 30.5 percent increase year on year, said Fang Shizhong, director of the district.
This year’s conference will have more than 300 company exhibitors and 300 speakers. It’s expected to attract 200,000 visitors including 70,000 professionals. More than half of the 300 speakers will come from overseas.
