The Shanghai-dialect Huju Opera film "Thunderstorm" hit the screen on Tuesday allowing audiences to savor the charm of haipai culture, the unique Shanghainese culture of East-meets-West.

The debut in Xuhui District attracted an audience of about 500 to the Huju Theater.

The Huju version of "Thunderstorm" was first staged in 1938, and several Huju adaptations of the play by Cao Yu have been made since then.

"Thunderstorm," a milestone in China's modern theater, deals with the disastrous effects of traditionalism and hypocrisy within a wealthy family.

Huju Opera, local to the Shanghai area, dates back more than 200 years.
