The man who smoked when waiting in line at a bus stop and then assaulted another man who told him to stop has been fined 200 yuan (US$28), Shanghai Association of Tobacco Control said in a statement on Thursday.

For the assault which took place on August 19, the man is out on bail but may face criminal charges, the association said.

The association called on all residents to condemn the man’s behavior. 

Smoking is banned in public transportation waiting areas, public places with an overwhelming presence of children, sports stadiums and performing art centers as well as relics sights open to public.

Those who smoke where it is banned and ignore warnings can be fined 50 to 200 yuan. Those who disturb order may be punished by the police.
