Officials with the Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation check exercise books in Jiading District.

More than 50,000 exercise books suspected of quality problems from two manufacturers in Jiading District and the Pudong New Area are undergoing tests  by the city's quality watchdog.

Law enforcement officials with the Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation inspected two stationery shops in Jiading District on Wednesday, and some exercise books from Shanghai Mingxing Paper Co and Shanghai Tengfei Cultural Product Factory failed tests for excessive whiteness.

"Excessive whiteness will hurt students' eyesight," said Xiao Jianfang, an engineer with the Shanghai Institute of Quality Inspection and Technical Research. "Fluorescent agents are probably added excessively by producers to make paper white."

At the factories of the two companies, 54,441 exercise books suspected of being substandard were found. They have been sent for laboratory tests by the administration.
