Heavy Metro traffic expected for holiday, festivals

Shanghai's Metro system is expected to see heavy passenger traffic over the next two weekends as the city celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival as well as festivals dedicated to shopping and tourism.

Shanghai Shentong Metro Group said they expect a first peak to come on Thurday, as some 12.5 million people are predicted to take the Metro. This compares to about 10 million on an average day.

Meanwhile, the Shanghai Tourism Festival will begin on Saturday, and Metro operators will add more trains on Metro Line 13 to facilitate passengers going to Yuyuan Garden and Xintiandi.

As the opening parade of the tourism festival will take place on Huaihai Road, some Metro stations along this road will be affected.

From 6pm on Saturday, exit 2 of South Huangpi Road Station and exit 3 of South Shaanxi Road Station on Line 1, as well as exit 1 of Middle Huaihai Road on Line 13, will be closed. The underground passage connecting South Huangpi Road and K11 shopping mall is also be suspended, said the Metro operator.
