A proposal on the joint promotion of culture and tourism between Shanghai and six "Belt and Road' sister cities was signed on Friday.

The six cities are Chiang Mai and Bangkok in Thailand, Budapest in Hungary, Phnom Penh in Cambodia, Metropolitan Manila of the Philippines and Jeollanam-do in South Korea.

"Culture and tourism always play an important role in connectivity and it enhances exchange and mutual friendship," said Yu Xiufen, director of the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism.

Under the promotion network laid out in the proposal, member cities will conduct closer cooperation and more cities are welcomed to join in to create a more diversified cultural and tourism exchange platform, the administration said.

Vice mayor Zong Ming attended the signing ceremony, which was held in Shanghai.

Performance troupes from "Belt and Road" countries will participate in the grand parade of the 2019 Shanghai Tourism Festival, kicking off on Saturday.
