Six teams of students from universities in the Yangtze River Delta region won top awards at the area's first landmark redesign competition.

The competition was initiated by Youth League committees from Shanghai and Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces.

Students from over 50 universities in the region were given the task of redesigning Century Square, a landmark at the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall in Shanghai.

The concepts derived from the competition will be later pitched to the Huangpu District government to contribute to further urban development.

This is the first design competition of its kind in a series for students in the Yangtze River Delta region. Similar contests will be held in other areas of China in the future.

Organizers say the competition aims to encourage students to contribute to the development of the region.
