The 9th Shanghai Philanthropy Partnership Day will kick off over the weekend in Huangpu District, featuring an exhibition, forum and activities highlighting garbage sorting and poverty alleviation, Shanghai's civil affairs authorities announced on Thursday.

The two-day event will be held at Shanghai Gongyi Xintiandi, a government-subsidized charity program park.

An exhibition highlighting 18 social organizations' involvement in garbage sorting will be held, as these organizations have played an active role in promoting waste classification via performances, handmade eco-friendly products, activities and other projects, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said.

A forum on how to encourage social organizations to play a greater role in garbage sorting and to participate in the governance of residential communities will be hosted during the event. It will gather officials from the Shanghai People's Congress, greenery authorities, and neighborhood committees and social organization representatives.

Schools and universities in the city will exhibit their philanthropy-related efforts in poverty alleviation, senior care, environmental protection and disaster relief. They will also host Yueju and Huju opera performances.

A list of 36 outstanding social organizations will be honored in areas such as science and technology, social service, law, education and commerce, according to the bureau.

In addition, 18 philanthropy projects and social organizations will receive awards during a philanthropy start-up competition.

Shanghai has registered 16,760 social organizations by August, according to the bureau.
