Shanghai's urban management and law enforcement authorities conduct a drill for the upcoming second CIIE

Shanghai's urban management and law enforcement authorities conducted a drill on Wednesday in preparation for the upcoming second China International Import Expo (CIIE).

Urban management and law enforcement officials from the Yangtze River Delta region also participated in the activity under a joint coordination mechanism which enables information sharing and joint investigations. The mechanism also helps law enforcement crack down on irregularities regarding garbage transport and treatment, illegal street vendors and distribution of advertisements.

During the expo, there will be more than 3,500 240-liter bins for waste sorting at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Qingpu District where the expo will be held, according to the bureau.

Volunteers will give guidance on waste sorting inside the venue, bins for wet and dry trash will be installed at each booth and there will be bins for wet, dry, hazardous and recyclable garbage in corridors.

Bilingual guides and signs are being posted.

During the first CIIE, more than 200 tons of waste was produced, or about the volume of 12 trucks a day.

A total of 4,235 irregularities related to illegal street vendors, illegal structures and signboards and illegal outdoor advertisements were identified by urban management and law enforcement authorities citywide in a CIIE-related sweep.

Most issues have been rectified and the rest will be resolved before the end of October, the Shanghai Urban Management and Law Enforcement Bureau said.

Inspections have been beefed up in areas near the National Exhibition and Convention Center, said Xu Zhihu, director of the bureau.

More than 19.74 million square meters of illegal structures have been dismantled across the city this year, involving 9,917 cases, the bureau said.

More than 29,000 cases involving illegal street vendors have also been busted.

A total of 11,835 food-related cases involving illegal night-time food vendors, barbecue stalls and breakfast stalls were busted as well, with 4,032 kilograms of food confiscated, according to the bureau.

The city's urban management and law enforcement authorities tackled 1,678 cases of greenery damage.

In addition, more than 10,000 cases involving illegal treatment of construction waste and 63 cases of burning garbage were busted citywide.

More than 200 cases of night construction were handled for disturbing residents, according to the bureau.

Urban management and law enforcement authorities in Qingpu District have conducted six rounds of campaigns targeting illegal street vendors, construction waste transportation, and illegal signboards to improve the landscape and environment of the district.

"The city's urban management and law enforcement inspections will center on five key areas, such as around the National Exhibition and Convention Center and Hongqiao business hub," said Xu.

Surveillance camera and patrols will be used to spot irregularities as soon as possible, he said.
