“Love of Loess Plateau,” a waist drumming show from Ansai, Shaanxi Province, was staged at Shanghai Great World in Huangpu District and Zhongshan Park in Changning District on Sunday.

The performances are part of the Art Space series, one of the core features of the annual Shanghai International Arts Festival.

As a traditional folk art, Ansai waist drumming has a history dating back to more than 2,000 years ago. The development of its distinctive character has been influenced by the natural and historical conditions of the unique Loess Plateau in the northwestern province.

The passionate drum beats and rousing movements presented by the performers showcased the vitality and tremendous breadth of Shaanxi’s local culture.

As a hallmark of Shaanxi’s folk arts, Ansai waist drummers have been invited to perform at important occasions, including the opening ceremony of the 11th Asian Games, the celebration ceremonies for the return of Hong Kong and Macau, as well as activities for the 50th, 60th and 70th anniversaries of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
