Scooter rider loses police case
A man who took the city's traffic police to court after his unregistered scooter was seized has lost his case, the Shanghai Railway Transport Court said on Monday.
The man, surnamed Zhu, was riding an electric scooter in Putuo District in November last year when he was stopped.
Police seized the vehicle and was told he would get it back after the matter was resolved with transport authorities within 15 days.
However, Zhu went to court arguing that as the scooter was for entertainment, there was no law saying it had to be registered.
However, the court said Zhu had violated the city's road traffic regulations, which stipulate that any vehicles, with the exception of bicycles, being used on the road need to be registered.
Electric scooters for entertainment purposes can only be used in places for entertainment, not on the road.
The court said police had acted lawfully and rejected Zhu's call for his scooter to be returned.
