New technologies like 3D printing, model reconstruction and new materials are now used in facial plastic surgery for precise reconstruction and renovation.

Digital technology and artificial intelligence are the future of plastic surgery, medical experts said on a seminar of Chinese Plastic and Beauty Association’s cranial-maxillofacial surgery branch in the city on Saturday.

New technology and new materials are the key content of the seminar.

“3D printing allows doctors to have a clear understanding to a patient’s facial construction ahead of the surgery and help achieve a more precise and individualized plan,” said Dr Liu Xianchao from Shanghai Ren’ai Hospital.

Polyether-ether-ketone, or PEEK, a new repairing material has become a new trend in facial surgery, because of its low infection rate and little impact to CT and MRI checks, experts said.
