Chinese paintings and pingtan (storytelling to music in Suzhou dialect) are used to introduce Chinese classic novel "Dream of the Red Chamber."

A two-day event "Flavor of Shanghai - a panoramic 'Dream of the Red Chamber' in painting and storytelling" opened at Tianzifang Art Center in Huangpu District on Sunday.

The event blends painting and pingtan (storytelling to music in Suzhou dialect) based on the classic novel "Dream of the Red Chamber." The art dialogue is presented by Gao Bowen, director of the Shanghai Pingtan Troupe, Chinese painter Dai Dunbang and Shanghai writer Ma Shanglong.

Tianzifang, home to galleries, boutique shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, represents the haipai (the unique Shanghai-style culture of East-meets-West) longtang (back alleyways) culture.
