Doctors give gaofang tips
Taking gaofang - a seasonal herbal paste tonic, is a popular TCM health tonic taken in winter - properly is important to ensure the best effects, local experts said at a traditional Chinese medicine health care festival over the weekend.
Gaofang has gained welcome among young and middle-aged people for its effects in easing fatigue, improving sleep and controlling chronic diseases.
Dr Liu Jinrong from Shanghai Ren’ai Hospital said many young and middle-aged people drink strong tea or coffee while taking gaofang, whose protein, alkaloid and iron ions can have adverse reaction with caffeine, theophylline and tannic acid in tea and coffee.
“People should avoiding eating raw, cold or oily food while taking gaofang,” Liu said. “There are also taboo for certain herbal materials and people should carefully follow doctor’s direction.”
