Fallen leaves will be left on 42 streets in 12 districts this autumn to create a colorful seasonal spectacle, Shanghai’s greenery authorities announced on Thursday.

Visitors to Sinan, Julu, Hengshan, Yueyang, Yongfu, Hunan, Wukang, Xinhua, Yuyuan and Fuxing W. roads, among other streets, will be able to appreciate not only the golden canopies above their heads, but the vibrant foliage beneath their feet.

Last year only 15 streets were allowed to retain their fallen leaves, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said.

These streets feature a variety of tree species such as plane, soapberry, gingko, acacia, camphor, sweet gum, pistache and goldenrain.

Xuhui and Changning districts have the largest number of such streets, each with eight.

Siping and Liyang roads in Hongkou District; Yuanjiang, Nanfu and Fudu roads in Minhang District; and Huale Road in Qingpu District are among the roads with the earliest turning foliage, according to the bureau.

The colorful streetscape created by fallen leaves on Hengshan, Yongfu, Yueyang, Hunan, Wukang, Yuqing and Guijiang roads in Xuhui District will last till year-end, at the latest, the bureau said.

These streets were picked based on their regional features, historic essence and architecture style, the bureau said. In addition, the foliage trees should have enough leaves with rich colors.

In Jing'an District, landscapes merging fallen leaves, historical buildings, bars and streets will reach peak appeal between December 1 and 15.

The fallen leaves shouldn’t affect the flow of traffic, the bureau said.

On rainy and hazy days, or in cases of public events, fallen leaves will be removed to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
