Bright, clear future through technology
New technology will help middle-aged and elderly people to cure their presbyopia and treat or prevent cataracts, according to a lecture in the city on Saturday.
The trifocal intraocular lens implantation can solve presbyopia and cataracts through one operation and people can enjoy a clear vision.
Presbyopia is a natural progressive process. When people age, the lens becomes stiff and dysfunctional, resulting in loss of near vision. People usually start to suffer presbyopia after 45 years old.
With aging, the lens also progressively becomes hard, yellow and cloudy, resulting in cataracts, which start to affect people after 60.
About 40 percent of people over 50 suffer presbyopia. Cataracts are a leading eye disease for the elderly and the top reason for blindness. About 46 percent of blindness is caused by cataracts, experts said.
“The aging of eyes can’t be treated by medicine. Surgery is the only solution,” said Dr Liao Huaping from Ruijin Hospital.
“With rising demand for better quality of life, patients do not want to tolerate years of progressive decline in their vision. They want it fixed permanently,” said Dr Jorn Slot Jorgensen from EuroEyes. “With the advancement in technology and the safety of the procedure, patients can have their natural lenses replaced at an earlier age to treat presbyopia, then cataract surgery will never be needed. The artificial lens will not age, which provides visual stability to the lens of the eye.”
“While the new technology is not well known by the public. We suggest the government and medical facilities and institutions to launch more education moves to promote the knowledge on vision protection and inform the public about the latest technology and medical improvement,” he said.
