More than 50 teams from kindergartens, schools and universities in Shanghai won awards in the citywide Destination Imagination competition over the weekend and will take part in the nationwide contest.

The competition included five categories of creative challenges, combining science, art, nature and society. For example, one challenge required contestants to create an invention that could be used in real life. Another challenge asked students to research an alien species and its habitat.

The competition also included impromptu challenges.

One team from Shanghai Changzheng Secondary School presented a story about flamingos that went to a new habitat in the desert, where their pink feathers turned white and their thin legs grew brawny. They won the first place for high schools in one challenge category.

A team of nine students from Yadong County of Tibet participated in the event for the first time and won an award for explorative spirit.
