Checks reveal substandard jewelry
Nearly half of 80 batches of jewelry checked by the city's market watchdog failed tests for unmatched materials and labeling, officials said on Wednesday.
A total of 36 batches were substandard, or 45 percent, the Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation said.
The 80 batches were from 48 brands and sold at 13 department stores, it said.
Sapphire rings made by Emperor Watch and Jewellery sold at the Shanghai New World Daimaru Department Store and pendants branded Buccellati and sold at Plaza 66 failed for both indexes, the administration said.
In addition, 130 batches of precious metal adornments of 41 brands that were sold by 44 shops were also checked, and 31 failed for precious metal quality and labeling.
A batch of Pandora pendants sold at Global Harbor failed for labeling, while two batches of Tiffany earrings and bracelets were substandard for the same problem.
Substandard labeling misleads consumers, the administration said.
The businesses involved have been ordered to suspend sales of substandard products, and clear their stocks of these products, it said.
