The China-Mauritius Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine opened in Port Louis this week as part of efforts to promote the overseas development of TCM.

The center is an international project under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It's also part of the Road and Belt initiative.

Shanghai Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine is behind the center's construction. The two countries will cooperate on TCM services, education, training and scientific research to promote TCM outside China, hospital officials said on Thursday.

Shanghai Yueyang and Caitongde Pharmaceutical Co have staffed two experienced TCM doctors and one TCM pharmacist at the center to offer acupuncture, tuina (a form of physical therapy), TCM prescriptions as well as herbal soup-making services for local patients in the island nation.

Dr Zhou Jia, president of Shanghai Yueyang Hospital, said the center will utilize TCM to treat ailments like diabetes, hypertension, obesity and skin diseases, all of which are prevalent in Mauritius.

“We will offer training in TCM theories and skills and build the center into a TCM center in Africa,” he said.
