Fire broke out at Shanghai Kerry Oils & Grains Industrial Co in northern Pudong around noon on Friday, the local government said, but there were no casualties.

By 5.30pm, the blaze at 118 Gaodong Road had spread to include four warehouses containing a few hundred tons of oil. Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 7:10pm.

A total of 46 fire engines attended and a number of excavators, concrete mixers, pump trucks and forklifts and a large number of sandbags were used in the operation, the government said.

To prevent damage to the environment, rainwater drains were blocked and, so far, no obvious oil pollution has been reported in nearby waterways. Tests of the water also showed no pollution while air quality around the area was unaffected, the government said.

An investigation is underway.
