Work began on the section of the Hutong Railway between the Pudong New Area and Taicang in Jiangsu Province on Sunday.

The Hutong, or Shanghai-Nantong Railway, will connect Shanghai, south of the Yangtze, with Nantong, north of the river. The railway will cross both the Yangtze and the Huangpu rivers through tunnels

Covering 112 kilometers, only 7 kilometers of track is in Jiangsu. Trains will travel at up to 200 kilometers per hour.

The construction is expected to take five years.

With major ports like Waigaoqiao and Yangshan located in the east of Shanghai, the railway will be crucial for freight transport.
