Police subdue knife-wielding man in downtown Shanghai

Police shot and wounded a man brandishing a knife near the crowded intersection of Xinzha Road and Xikang Road in Jing’an District on Sunday night.

Police in Jing’an District were informed around 8pm that a man was wielding a knife near the intersection.

They rushed to the scene and repeatedly asked the man to drop the knife, but he didn’t listen.

Instead, he suddenly rushed at police and passers-by, which posed extreme risks to people, the police said.

To ensure the safety of people at the scene, police shot the man. He has been admitted to hospital.

His injuries are not life threatening.

A preliminary police investigation found that the man, surnamed Zhou, aged 57, lives nearby.

He had been detained by police several times for causing trouble after getting drunk.

Investigations are continuing.
