A 17-year-old man has been detained after driving through a police road block in a freight truck he allegedly stole, authorities said on Monday.

The man, surnamed Wang, has no driving license. Chinese law doesn’t allow people under 18 to obtain such licenses.

The incident took place at 11:30pm on December 2 in the Pudong New Area, where traffic police had set up a road block at the intersection of Zhangjiang Road and Huayi Road to look for drunk drivers.

Wang stopped at the intersection, but as police approached to check his vehicle, he suddenly accelerated and fled before being intercepted at another intersection about 2 kilometers away, police said.

Wang crashed his stolen truck into a police vehicle and then fled again before being cornered about 5 kilometers away, according to the police.

Wang allegedly stole the truck earlier that evening from a village in Xuanqiao Town, about 25 kilometers from the first police road block he encountered. Police say Wang found the vehicle unlocked, with the keys inside, and decided to steal it.
