Visitors take in an exhibit at the 6th National Undergraduate Public Visual Arts exhibition by Zhai Shuhao of Tsinghua University.

Over 100 works created by some of China’s most talented art undergraduates are on show to the public at China Art Museum from this weekend.

The 6th National Undergraduate Public Visual Arts exhibition runs through January 8  and is organized by Shanghai Urban Planning and Natural Resources Bureau and Putuo District government.

The exhibition features works by more than 100 students and includes sculptures, installations and new materials. The organizer collected works from nearly all the nation’s major art colleges and universities.

"Today's college students are trying to create a new style and space with unique art language, new materials, new technologies and new styles,” said Yu Jiyong, a local sculptor and curator of the exhibition.

Critics and curators, such as Sun Zhenhua, director of the Public Art Center in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, were invited to choose some outstanding pieces.

"Public art is a universal concept, we hope that everyone can share and participate in art,” says Sun.

The selected works highlight the artistic exploration and ideological trends of students. The judges emphasized on not only the quality and artistic value of works, but also the coordination of work and environment and the interaction between the works and the public.

Zhai Shuhao, a senior student from Tsinghua University, won the top prize for an installation "Chord." His work combines mechanical devices with sculptures. Zhai said the installation tries to show the harmony and beauty of the nature and makes the audiences feel comfortable.

Some of the best works suitable for outdoor space have been displayed in the major public spaces across the city.

While supporting the growth of young artists, the exhibition also contributes to enhancing the artistic quality of urban public spaces and integrating the arts into the ordinary life of the general public, according to the district government.
