New awards for outstanding literary and art translation were established on Wednesday.

The awards are initiated by the Shanghai Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Shanghai Writers' Association and Shanghai Translators Association to develop the city into a center for the translation of international culture and arts.

In addition to introducing excellent works from all over the world to Shanghai, the city will also support the creation and global distribution of more original local works.

The awards will be given every three years, starting in 2020.

Fudan University professor Wei Yuqing, also director of the Shanghai Translators Association, said celebrated translators such as Fu Lei and Cao Ying are part of Shanghai's cultural history.

Wei believes the awards will also help enhance new international cultural exchanges.
