A giant “century gate” has been erected at Century Plaza on Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall to mark the beginning of New Year's celebrations at the downtown landmark.

Residents and tourists are invited to enter the 6-meter-tall gate and make New Year's wishes at the plaza.

They can also enjoy art installations at the plaza which recall the development of Nanjing Road E., also known as “China’s No. 1 street." The road was originally built in 1851 as one of the city’s first modern roads.

Magic shows, music, clowns and light shows will be presented during the celebration.

Time-honored food brands along the road, such as Shao Wan Sheng, Taikang, Laodafang and Sanyang, are selling their most popular products at stalls set up at the plaza.

Unionpay, China Mobile and China Construction Bank will also showcase their latest products and technologies.

After the celebration, the plaza will undergo a major renovation along with an extension of the pedestrian street.

The street is being extended to Sichuan Road M. next year. The current Pedestrian Mall, which stretches between Xizang Road M. and Henan Road M., will be extended toward the Bund by about 300 meters.

New stores will be added to the street, while traditional malls will reopen after renovation. A newly established association of businesses and malls has also been formed to improve the road.
