Local health authorities launched an educational program to promote a healthy lifestyle and disease prevention at a live talk show on Wednesday.

The first episode of "Health Shanghai Talk Show" focused on sports with doctors and sports professionals invited to give their views on which sports were best for local residents.

The doctors said sports can reduce the risk of death due to chronic diseases by 50 percent over the next 30 years and reduce the risk of death due to cancer after the age of 65 by 32 percent. Sports can prolong life by 6 to 9 years and prolong the duration of life without mobility problems by seven years.

They also gave tips on the prevention and control of sports injuries.

"Some people stop sports due to injury. It is inappropriate," said Dr Ge Yunshen from Huashan Hospital's sports medicine department. "Minimally invasive surgery on sports injuries ensure a quick recovery and the earlier the rehabilitation the better the results."
